Loretta V. says, "Jesse is truly an extraordinary person and coach. His ability to be gently firm with the kids is invaluable! I especially appreciate his genuine concern for the kids and their families. Jesse has heart, drive and passion. My son has grown so much from attending karate with Jesse, and he really enjoys it (big deal for us!). I honestly can't say enough great things about Jesse...if he decided to teach ballet we'd probably drop karate and follow him to the dance studio! " Read more

Your kickboxing questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do kickboxing classes cost?

Kickboxing classes cost $120 to $170 per month on average. Prices depend on the number of classes per week included in the membership plan and the gym or studio location. Membership plans that include unlimited classes per month typically fall at the higher end of the range.

Most gyms also offer drop-in classes for $30 to $50 each. On-demand kickboxing classes offered online cost $20 to $40 per month.

What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a full-contact combat sport that relies on striking movements, including punches, kicks, and knees. Competitive fights typically take place in a boxing ring, with fighters wearing boxing gloves, shorts, and mouth guards. Muay Thai, karate, and most other martial arts incorporate aspects of kickboxing.

In recent years, kickboxing has been adapted into a high-intensity calorie-burning fitness workout.

What is the difference between kickboxing and boxing?

Traditional boxing only allows punches, while kickboxing allows punches, kicks, and knees.

Is kickboxing a good workout?

Kickboxing is an excellent high-intensity workout that combines cardio and strength training to provide a variety of health and fitness benefits:

  • Build your strength and tone your muscles
  • Burn fat and lose weight
  • Improve your cardio health
  • Increase your endurance
  • Boost your energy
  • Improve your balance and coordination

A kickboxing fitness class can burn 350 to 450+ calories per hour, depending on the intensity level and class length.

Is kickboxing good for self-defense?

Kickboxing can be effective for self-defense if learned from a martial arts studio. The sport incorporates strikes like punching and kicking while also teaching you to evade or defend against attacks. However, kickboxing doesn't incorporate grappling moves like those found in Jiu-Jitsu or Aikido that help you to escape an attacker holding you on the ground.

Cardio kickboxing fitness classes don't provide self-defense skills but will improve your strength, coordination, and endurance.

How long do kickboxing classes last?

Kickboxing fitness and martial arts classes typically last 45 to 60 minutes.

Where to find kickboxing classes near me?

Follow these tips to find the best kickboxing studio near you:

  • Compare membership packages from multiple studios.
  • Read studio and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the studio offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the studio to confirm it's clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free or discounted trial class to ensure the studio is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask kickboxing studios?

Ask these questions to ensure you find the best kickboxing studio for you:

  • What membership plans do you offer, and how much do they cost?
  • Do you offer a free or discounted trial class?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • Are your classes beginner-friendly?
  • Are your classes more fitness-oriented or martial arts-oriented?
  • How many people are in a typical class?
  • How long does each class last?
  • What should I wear to class?
  • Do I need to be in good shape before I take a class?

Jesse is an awesome teacher with so much patience. He sets standards for class and holds the kids to it but also has fun with them too. It has really helped our son being in his class and we love the values and morals he teaches on top of karate. Great teacher, great class and we enjoy going.

I joined this school years ago, after a 30-year pause in martial arts (did Tae Kwon Do in high school), after my son joined. One of my daughters and one of my nephews joined too, and for years we trained together, it was great! We get our belt ranking in Tae Kwon Do, our forms are Tae Kwon Do, but we also train in practical self-defense, boxing and kick-boxing, and martial art weapons (escrima, bo, nunchucks). Physical conditioning is interwoven into all the curriculum, and is part of belt testing. Students are constantly encouraged and their progress is frequently measured and rewarded. For parents who don't want to do the martial arts, there are cardio kickboxing classes, so you can do that while your kid is training. My nephew and son reached 2nd degree black belt rank, my daughter and I are 3rd degree and still going — and my daughter founded her own cardio kickboxing and self defense class at her college, as a freshman. This is a wonderful school.

After a number of years training with him, I can say that Steve is an excellent instructor. He demonstrates a visible passion for what he does, and definitely really cares that those he instructs both have fun and effectively learn the techniques he teaches. Steve's focus on character in classes for younger students is also very impressive, getting the entire class engaged by using Martial Arts as a conduit for development. As a whole, he is a great instructor who I would highly recommend for any age group!

This is an amazing facility with an approach that benefits the whole child. My son has trained for almost 3 years and his coordination, confidence and ability to concentrate has improved immensely. I am so impressed with the coaching team. My son especially respects Master H and Master Luft. As a school teacher myself, I always learn something from their motivational techniques. Great Facility!

Max was a breath of fresh air to Muay Thai, kickboxing and sparring. For being so young, his passion, inspiration, skill and love for the sport was nothing short of motivating and contagious! I truly enjoyed having him as a coach and feel that much better as a student being able to learn and train under Max!

Since training at Ninomiya Martial Arts, I have learned and grown so much physically and mentally as well. Sensei Jota always shows patience and passion in every exercise we do, and it has truly been an honor being able to train under the Ninomiya name. I would highly recommend anyone to join Ninomiya Martial Arts as I hope it will benefit and inspire your life as much as it has mine. Osu
