Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I find out what style of music they are interested in. If they have already played I'll listen to what they are doing and assess what will be the best way to help them improve. I carefully create a specific approach based on each person's interests.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Degrees in Classic Guitar Performance: A Bachelor of Music fromt the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Master of Music from the Hartt School of Music in West Hartford. Certificates of study from the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, Sienna Conservatory in Italy and the Vila Secca i Salou Conservatory in Spain. Numerous master classes with some of the greats like Oscar Ghiglia, David Russell, Eliot Fisk, Pepe Romero, Manuel Barrueco and many others.
Many years of teaching in schools, arts center and private studios.
How did you get started teaching?
At a young age I started teaching people I knew and realized that I enjoyed it. So I started teaching at all types as a teenager.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students at all levels and with many different styles of music. My specialty is working with adults.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently played a program with my husband Mark Levesque for Cinco de Mayo that was a lot of fun. We develop our own arrangements of music from many countries for guitar duo and guitar/mandolin.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure the teacher is qualified to teach the style or styles you want to learn. Try a lesson without a longer commitment to see if you like the approach of the teacher.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What would I most like to learn?
How would the teacher approach the lessons? Is there one approach they use for everyone or do they adapt to each student?
How much time can I commit to practice?
Do I have the right type of guitar for what I want to play or can the teacher help with that?
