I try to balance the personal goals of the student with what can help them achieve those goals. I also try to balance curiculum with free inquiry and improvisation.

I ask them questions about what they want to learn in guitar lessons. I ask them what experience they have had with the guitar, and I ask them to perform some of what they know.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

There would probably be four sections to the guitar lesson. One would be review and warm-up. The second would be technique. The third would be the piece we are working on, and the fourth would be what to work on in the next week.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

One who has an idea of what they want to learn and tries out what I teach them. A student who is willing to practice and ask questions. A student who is open to working hard but not overly obsessed with being perfect. A student who is willing to do things they don't like in order to achieve what they do.
