About

My teaching approach:

I like to ensure that the student has a firm grasp on the guitar's tuning system and how that works out in patterns on the guitar and then based upon the students goals and objectives begin to work out how they want to best express themselves. I own a variety of electric and acoustic guitars; Fender, PRS, Takamine and amps as well Roland, Fender, Line 6, Peavey, Crate. I generally let the students try to find what THEY like and how we can develop the sound they hear in THEIR heads.

My influences are:

Prince, Jesse Johnson, Jimmy Nolan, Freddie Stone, Leo Nocentelli, Dez Dickerson, Wendy Melvoin,Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, George Benson, Tito Jackson, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery

My guitar lessons take place in:

The teacher's studio or the student's home

Guitar Lessons with me take place in the following areas:

Students Homes in Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Chevy Chase and Bethesda and my Studio in Takoma Park.

Guitar Techniques:

Guidance In Equipment Selection, Recording and Production, Song Writing, Scales and Exercises, Music Theory, Reading Music, Improvisation, Performance, Vocal Accompaniment, Rhythm guitar, Lead guitar

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

Ask them what knowledge they may already possess about guitar playing and music, and then try to fill in any gaps in their knowledge with a comprehensive guitar specific explanation and demonstration of how the distinct aspects of the guitar and music contrast and combine to create the music they wish to play. I may have the student play me a tune or fragment if they're able and see how we can proceed.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

I ask what the student's goals are for their musical development and then try to begin by having them develop a foundation for how the instrument works and how to execute the tone groups they will be using to create the sounds they want to create. I , in addition to giving them tutelage in what they may already be aurally familiar with, give them stylistic choices and exercises they may have never thought of attempting, to inform their playing.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

Someone who is willing to empty their mind of preconceived notions and "wear the white belt" as it were, to add to any knowledge they may already possess and help them create the sound only THEY can make. I look for those willing to do the work and willing to be patient with themselves as their mind and body develops a new skill. Someone who appreciates the gift of simply being alive and the wonder of creating music from such rudimentary tools.
