Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start by introducing myself and asking them to tell me about themselves. They usually will soon will notice my two cats wandering in and out of the music studio. During a students first lesson I will start with general musicianship skills and ask the student if they have a song they would like to sing or play for me. If they do not have a song they want to share, I will start with basic exploration of the keyboard for a piano lesson. During a first voice lesson I start with warm up exercises and familiar songs to find their range and hear their tone quality.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I earned an undergraduate degree in Music Education/voice from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and a Masters of Music from West Chester University. I have taught music in public and private schools, taught Kindermusic, and worked as a church musician. I have performed with various theater companies, summer stock theater, performed with the Cincinnati Pops orchestra, and as a back-up singer for Barry Manilow.

I currently have students in my studio from preschool through adult.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am fond of preparing my vocal students for auditions for musicals. It is so rewarding to help them learn to express themselves through singing and acting. I so enjoy watching them perform during the musicals! My piano students are currently selecting pieces to perform in our Spring Recital, it is a joy to help them select which songs bring they enjoy playing and want to share with their families.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Just go ahead a take a lesson. Get to know the teacher and start making music. It is like making a new friend. Enjoy the beautiful sounds of music together. Music is for life.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students and parents should think about how often they want lessons, why do they want to learn more about music, and what expectations do they have.
