My overarching philosophy of teaching music is to improve my students’ musical development along four areas: thinking, feeling, listening and doing. I believe music is a thought process, an emotional expression and a learned physical experience. My philosophy is to teach music by addressing all these areas. The student who merely learns to play but never understands musical theory and musical literature is not fully developed. Likewise, a student who learns to play but has no emotional connection to the music is left without the joy and sorrow that is so important for the full expression of music. Additionally, I believe a music instructor must find ways to create an atmosphere that encourages a student to continually work towards improving their physical abilities to play music. When you combine all four elements to a musical philosophy, the teacher and the students create an environment where musical learning can elevate to the highest of levels. This is my musical philosophical goal, to allow the instruction and students to continually develop all these elements to bring out the best musical possibilities.
