My teaching approach:
My teaching approach is very practical, I emphasize playing the instrument first and then learning music theory. the exercises are necessary but a fair amount of them. I tend to favor playing the music the student is familiar with, or he really likes. That makes learning the guitar FUN, and that is the main purpose to me, have fun playing music, singing, strumming, be part of a band, writing original tunes. I've teaching guitar for more than 25 years. I am bilingual: English and Spanish. Español es mi lengua nativa. I've got a master's degree from Temple University. My influences are:
The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, the Doors< Moody Blues Progressive and classic rock bands Silvio Rodriguez, Pablo Milanes, Nueva trova Joan Manuel Serrat, World music (Ethnic), latinomerican folk music. My guitar lessons take place in:
The teacher's studio or the student's home.Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:
I talk with the student about his/her interest on the guitar, and ask: "why do you want to learn?" "what music do you want to play?". After showing posture, guitar placement, explain about hand and fingers, I ask the student to perform a very basic right hand fingers movements, and if He/She can do it that's enough for me to start. I believe practice is what you need to become proficient, everyone has a certain amount of natural ability.A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:
The first half of the lesson usually reviews the material that was practiced during the week. On the second half new material is introduced. As the student gets better I devote some time to play just for fun, usually the pieces the student enjoys the most, sometimes adding a bit of improvisation or creating music on the spot. When a certain music theory concept needs to be introduced I do so in a practical way.The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:
My ideal guitar student: practices many times the exercises or songs. Receives teacher's suggestions and instructions in a receptive way. Likes MUSIC!!! enjoys it.
