Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I talk to the student about what their goals are musically so that we can start a path toward achieving those goals. Some students want to learn to read music and play classical music; others would like to play pop or jazz music by learning chords. I focus on whatever is more important to the particular student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a lot of experience teaching the piano, and began taking lessons myself at age 7. I also have experience performing many styles of music from classical to jazz, in groups or solo. I have a bachelor's degree in jazz studies and a master's degree in composition.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Our rate at Willow Music is $65 an hour ($32.50 for half hour)
How did you get started teaching?
My mother is a music teacher, and I began to teach students while still in high school as a part of her music studio.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with many complete beginners as well as people with previous experience, from as young as 6 years old to adults. Adult students sometimes come for lessons because they studied music in the past and they want to rediscover what they used to know.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What is my ultimate goal in music? What type of music/what songs or pieces would I like to eventually be able to play? How much time do I think I will spend on music every day?
