My boys enjoy his teaching method. Mr. Bernard teaches his students without leaving them frustrated by the end of the lesson.

Stefan is a great teacher. He has a calm demeanor and teaches in a way that allows people to relax rather than stress over piano. My son likes him very much. I would recommend him wholeheartedly.

Stefan is a very talented teacher who has a unique ability to tune in to a student's particular needs and identify the student's personal path to growth. He is extremely patient and creates an environment in which students feel encouraged to grow and are not intimidated. Highly recommend.

I am a former concert pianist working to restore my pianistic abilities. I suffer from significant decreased dexterity and articulation partly because I have been away from the keyboard for quite a long time but mostly because I have exerted my hands doing heavy construction work. Now as a retired person, I have the time to start playing again. Because of my hand issues, I have sought help from someone who understood the mechanics of the hand to help me find ways to restore my fingers. I found that person in Mr. Stefan Bernhard, his instructional abilities are outstanding. Not only is he an expert at helping me find creative ways to circumvent my issues and improve the quality of my playing but he is also a pianist with profound knowledge of the vast classical piano repertoire. He possesses a rare combination of stylistic knowledge of musical interpretation as well as a keen understanding of the mechanics of the hand. He has helped me solve technical problems by using alternative fingering, hand position, weight leveraging as well as proper posture and other restorative techniques. His approach is to help his students produce a beautiful balanced sound with a wide dynamic range always maintaining clear phrasing and proper musical form. Mr. Bernhard encourages his students to explore new musical approaches and fosters the development of their individual musical personality. He also stresses working on the very important and often neglected psychological aspect of playing the piano in public encouraging a healthy mental approach to minimize stress. His guidance has already enabled me to perform two successful concerts in the past seven months. I always look forward to our sessions to work on the challenges new repertoire brings about. I highly recommend Mr. Bernhard, he is an excellent piano teacher, instructor and mentor.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I usually start with introducing myself to the student and parents and take the time to get to know thier personal story as well. I cover guidelines for the lessons at the outset to avoid any confusion later on down the line (i.e. rewards, expectations, required books and supplies). This is followed by introducting the student to the piano and its internal mechanisms. Then, we go on to cover basic "keyboard geography" before teaching a simple piece he or she can continue working on at home with a few simple practice instructions.

With young beginners, I typically have a parent sit in lessons and have them reinforce concepts in supervised practice sessions at home. In some cases it is normal for these students to take a few lessons to "open up" and fully engage in the process.

Lessons are concluded with a few minutes answering any remaining music related questions  (i.e. practice methods, or anything we've discussed in class).
