Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
It's most important to understand each person's specific motivation. People are individuals. Each and every person has unique reasons for getting involved with lessons as well as learning traits that are specific to them. For example, a person aged 65 who is looking to simply take on lessons as a new hobby for personal enjoyment is to be respected for that and the approach to coaching this individual would be much different than the teenager who is looking to enter college with a major in music.
I have a passion for music and for catering to people individual goals. My 35+ years of experience has led to my being as much of a student as my clients when it comes to learning how to help them in better, more creative ways.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have enjoyed students aged 5-92. No two people have ever been exactly alike, which is partially responsible for my passion for teaching. What works for one person isn't necessarily what's right for another. I really love getting to know the specific traits and learning patterns of an individual. It really keeps it all very interesting for me.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
A student can easily get an idea of how a teacher will relate to him or her by some preliminary correspondence. Asking questions of a prospective teacher can be powerfully effective. Allow one question to lead to another with a genuine sense of curiosity. A short conversaion can reveal plenty of insight.
