About
Give yourself the gift of music! In the midst of these trying times the arts are more important than ever. Soar off to a world of beauty. Soothe your soul. Realize a dream. Improve your quality of life! "The Spaulding Music Studio" has been serving music students in Sarasota since 1991. Prior to that I taught in Indiana and Pennsylvania. I offer private voice, piano and music theory lessons for students of all ages. Currently my studio includes students from 6 to 70 something years of age! In my 27 years of experience in teaching, each of my students has been excited by their musical growth. I have a structured approach to instruction, but tailor lessons to meet the student's individual needs. No prior training is necessary! Lessons are for students of all abilities. Some students come with the desire to improve their skills for their own enjoyment, some come with prior training, some are preparing for an audition or are college music students, some even wish to make a career in music, others seek help with their speaking voice for business presentations. Everyone is welcome. My goal is to help my students meet and exceed their goals and have more life through the joy of music. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education (1987, Ball State University) and a Master of Music degree in Voice (1994, University of South Florida). I've taught music in middle and high schools in Indiana, Pennsylvania and Sarasota. Currently I am adjunct staff for State College of Florida teaching private voice and piano lessons and Music Appreciation classes, as well as teaching in the Spaulding Music Studio. Teaching music is not my job. It is my vocation. It is my passion. There is nothing I love more than seeing a student's face light up when she finally "gets it"! I'd love to see your face light up.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We will use our first meeting to discuss the student's goals. I have a form that I fill in that addresses experience, strength's, areas for improvement and anything else the student and/or parent wishes to add.
Then I'll see and hear what the student can do at the time and share a plan for future lessons.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My Bachelor's degree is in K - 12 Music Education. My Master's degree is in Vocal Performance.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
At this point my lesson fees are: 30 minutes = $25, 45 minutes = $37 and 60 minutes = $50.
How did you get started teaching?
Both of my parents were teachers and regularly had me visit their classrooms to participate in giving lessons. They were Master Teachers and I caught the bug!
I first began my private piano teaching when I was 16. I drove to students' homes.
I'm still in touch with my first student in 1983!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have students from ages 5 to nearly 80.
Some of my students have been working through ADHD, depression, autism spectrum, recovery from brain trauma, etc.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
When I was searching for a teacher for myself, I went to a recital to hear what that teacher's students sounded like. If they all had the same bad habits I did not go to that teacher.
Everyone should sound like him/herself!
