Bob W. says, "I’m 48 years old and I’ve always loved music, but I never believed I could actually make it. Picking up an instrument, writing a song, or even singing in front of someone always felt completely out of reach for me. Working with Ben changed that. He has this rare ability to make the process feel both approachable and exciting. In just a short time, I went from doubting myself to actually playing guitar, writing my own songs, and even recording my voice. Things I never thought I’d be able to do. Ben’s patience and encouragement helped me push past that mental block, and his deep knowledge of music made every step feel clear and achievable. I honestly feel like a whole new world opened up for me, and I can’t believe how much fun I’m having. If you’ve ever thought, ‘I wish I could play or write music, but it’s too late for me,’ take it from me, it’s not. Ben will get you there." Read more

Anais V. says, "I LOVE LOVE this music class. I 100 million percent recommend sending your kiddos here. Ms.Herme and Mr.Jay are the most patient and kindest teachers ever. I’ve been taking my 6 year old brother here for coming on half a year and he’s a little piano pro. He’s gotten to the point to where he’s over here teaching me how to play. And he doesn’t even need the sheet, it’s muscle memory at this point. He loves it , mom and dad love it. Super friendly environment. If you needed a second opinion… here it is. Even the other families of the kiddos are great. 10/10 music class. You won’t regret it!" Read more

Naveena G. says, "Mr. Cook has been a God sent to our family. Our son is 8years old and he used to take lessons from a local guitar store here in Pooler, Georgia . I wasn't very happy with what was being taught so I posted on lessons.com for a guitar instructor. Mr. Cook was the first one to respond to us and we decided to give him a try. We were super impressed with his approach to teaching, his patience and gentleness. He is very encouraging and motivates him greatly. You can tell that he is passionate about teaching and developing the student. Our son has not only improved in the last couple of months with him, he actually enjoys taking lessons and looks forward to class every week. I'm so grateful to Mr. Cook and to lessons.com for helping me find the BEST guitar instructor ever!! My only regret is that I cannot give him 100 stars!!!" Read more

Your Guitar Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do guitar lessons cost near me?

Guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per lesson, depending on if they last 30 minutes or up to 1 hour. If it's a one-on-one lesson, it'll cost around $45 to $70 hourly. Learning guitar in a group is cheaper at $25 to $35 per session.

If you're taking lessons every month, it adds up to $170 to $315 with the typical prepaid discount.

Are guitar lessons worth it?

Guitar lessons are worth it since only a professional teacher giving you live feedback can guide you to learn faster. A good instructor helps you understand your mistakes and prevents you from developing bad habits.

Learning guitar by yourself takes a lot longer and won't prepare you as well to play in public.

At what age should I start guitar lessons?

Children can start guitar lessons from the ages of 6 to 10, or when they can comfortably hold the guitar and press the strings. Adults can start guitar lessons at any age, provided they practice regularly and patiently.

How many guitar lessons do I need?

The number of guitar lessons you need varies according to your goal and your practice routine. For many people, it typically takes about 2 to 6 months to play a simple tune. Mastering the guitar like a professional can take anywhere from 4 to 10 years.

What do you learn in guitar lessons?

In most guitar lessons, you can expect to learn:

  • How to correctly position your fingers to play chords
  • How to tune your guitar
  • How to play various scales
  • New techniques for plucking and strumming
  • How to read sheet music.

Are online guitar lessons good?

Online guitar lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour and are good for getting personal instruction from skilled teachers worldwide. Take advantage of flexible scheduling and immediate feedback while learning new guitar-playing styles. Plus, you can easily record lessons to review their advice later.

How do I find the best guitar lessons near me?

In order to find the best guitar lessons for you, look through nearby teachers listed here on the Lessons website. You can also ask for teachers at local music stores or community colleges.

Before you hire a guitar teacher, make sure to:

  • Check out prices from at least 3 different teachers.
  • Read their reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Ask for a list of their current or previous students that you can talk to.
  • Talk to other parents about the teacher's reputation with their children.
  • Make sure you get a written agreement and schedule before your first lesson.
  • Avoid making a big payment upfront for a month of lessons until you're comfortable with the teacher.

What questions do I ask when choosing a guitar teacher?

To find the right guitar teacher, you can ask them these questions:

  • What kind of music degree do you have?
  • How many years of experience do you have in teaching guitar?
  • Can I have a free trial lesson to see if your teaching style helps me?
  • What is the average age of your students?
  • Will you assign me finger exercises as homework?
  • How often should I practice between lessons?
  • What textbooks do I need, and where can I buy used ones?
  • How many guitar-playing styles are you an expert in?
  • Can you modify your teaching style to suit my learning abilities?
  • What should I bring to our lessons, and how long is each one?
  • Can I get a copy of our schedule, agreement, and payment terms?
  • What is your policy if I have to cancel a class due to an emergency?
  • Can I choose some of my favorite songs to learn on the guitar?

My daughter and I have been working with Ben for well over a year now, learning guitar, and I couldn't be happier with the experience. Ben has a wealth of knowledge and experience, which he has a real passion to share with us. This goes a long way towards feeling truly invested in the learning process, especially in the beginning, where everything is new and difficult. He offers motivation for not only me, but more importantly for my 11-year-old daughter, who has confidence issues at times. His patience during the sessions where she is less than attentive is sincerely impressive. Ben will adjust his lessons on the fly, if needed, to accommodate our needs. If there is a song that I'm interested in learning, he'll switch to that, quickly figure out what it takes to play it, and jump right into teaching us the song. He'll even make adjustments to the song to fit my experience level, allowing me to play a song, even if I may not be at the technical level that the song actually requires. He is also extremely flexible on the days where we might need to shift our schedule or even cancel. Since we started taking lessons from Ben, we've gone from complete novices, to being able to muddle through a song, to actually being able to play over a dozen songs completely, on our own. If you are looking to take lessons that will motivate you to really enjoy the process of learning guitar, I highly recommend him as your instructor.

I'm an older hobbyist who has picked up and quit on the guitar more times with more teachers than I can count. Stevie is the first teacher that got thru to me in a way that resonated. He's got all the chops and theory if that's what you need, but what I really appreciate is his focus on feel. I've always gotten discouraged by how clumsy my left hand is and he's helped me to understand that, while important, the left hand will catch up. If you can get the rhythm/feel with your right hand, you've got something to build off of. His demeanor is laid back and chill, his lessons are informative and give you plenty to build on and the homework is a good mix of fun and work. I can't recommend him enough.

Sean is the best!!! I've been doing lessons with him for many years now. He taught me how to play guitar and bass for school and now we continue to play for fun since graduation. From childhood to adulthood, Sean has been my go-to! 10 Stars. Would highly recommend.
