Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I assess the student's level and ability first to assign the right materials for the student. Also, I make sure to encourage the parents to participate and support the student with her/his lessons and assignments. It is important for a student to love the music and not think of it as a chore, so I always try to make the lessons fun and engaging. I start my new students with Theory, Technique, Lesson Pieces, Fun songs and occasional composition classes and sight reading sessions.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Bachelors, Applied Music (Piano Performance)
Aug 1986 - May 1990 University of Central Florida
Governor's Honors Program - 1985 for Piano (Georgia)
Studied under Mr. David Watkins (president of American Matthay Association 1994-1998) Piano and Theory
Attended Summer Program Sponsored by Musician's Club of America
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I teach all levels and ages 3 and up
My fees are:
30 Min - $40
45 Min - $50
60 Min - $60
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching (kids mostly) while I was in College at a Piano Store. Also, I tutored other fellow college students (None piano majors) Music Theory and Piano performance.
What types of students have you worked with?
All ages and all levels.
I also taught some special needs kids
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Last major event was MTAC (Music Teachers Association of California) CM (Certificate of Merit) testing. My students all passed with high scores on both performance and theory.
I also enter my students in MTNA auditions and NFMC jr. Music festival annually as well as doing 2 recitals a year. What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
It is hard to find a teacher who is well qualified and also compatible with the student. Always give at least 3 months to make a decision whether to stay with the new teacher or not. Always make sure that the teacher is covering all the basics of music such as technique and theory as well as the method books and recital/performance materials.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1. How long had the teacher been teaching and playing
2. Can a teacher provide list of references (former students)
3. What method and repertoire is used
4. If there are recitals and other programs for the students to participate in
5. How much are the fees and where the lessons are going to be held
6. Time and availability
