About

I am an experienced musician having studied piano and clarinet for over 25 years! I studied music at Augustana College and have over 15 years experience playing in a variety of musical ensembles and recitals. I remain active in music today as a member of the Southwest Community Concert Band as well as a piano accompanist for junior high and high school students participating in the IGSMA and IHSA solo contests.

I have nearly 15 years of private teaching experience, a majority of which is with children, but I welcome all ages who are willing to learn! I was classically trained and successfully completed the Suzuki Piano Method series, but have experience playing a variety of genres and encourage students to learn using a diversified repertoire. My comprehensive teaching approach includes a variety of skills and activities including: playing, sight reading, music theory, music history, etc. The curriculum is individually developed based on the needs/goals of the student.

MY

Michelle Y.

Kim has taught my two children, ages 9 and 13, for 4 months now. My two children are learning very well, as Kim is very patient and attentive. She knows every students personality and lets them learn at their own pace. Whenever my childrens classes are over, Kim writes down notes on what they still need to learn, which has helped my children learn piano smarter. I highly recommend her for any parent.

Lessons start at $22/half hour.

I started teaching privately in high school as a way to earn money on the weekends because I could share what I loved doing with others.

While I mostly enjoy the challenge working with beginning students, I have worked with students from all experience levels ranging from ages 4 through adult.

I host an annual piano recital for my students. It is always a great experience for them to perform and show others all the progress they have made and see how proud they are to know that all of their hard work has paid off!

Students who are the most successful are the ones that understand that learning to play a musical instrument is something that not only requires a love for music, but also that it takes practice and commitment.  Progress is not always shown by how many songs you can play, but rather through the mastery of certain skills and that can sometimes be frustrating for students.  I encourage anyone interested in lessons to consider this and recognize the small victories that are shown when a student works hard on a skill that was challenging.
