i start with an excercise which is used to work on finger independence of the right hand, alternating the index and middle fingers. And the left hand, placing all four fingers on the fretboard, as they move one after the other up and down the neck of the guitar in between the frets. This helps work both hands in unison.

trust that the teacher knows what he teaches does work. You will both benefit in the long run.
Be open with your teacher about your needs. Don’t ask his long it takes to learn something. It depends on how much you put into it.
