About
My name is Alex Giger, and I'm a Chicago-based violinist/violist. I offer in-person or virtual lessons for you, and can accommodate your schedule for a lesson.
My style of teaching is empathetic and socratic. I create goals and customize lessons to help you develop your viola skills in a way that improves your applied critical thinking. I have over a decade of experience teaching students of all ages. My HS students have found success at youth orchestra (some currently in CYSO) and college auditions. I find great joy in teaching motivated students of all ages to discover a new side of themselves and help them reach their greatest potential! I'm ready to challenge you at a pace that works best for your violin/viola goals.
I moved to Chicago to perform with Civic Orchestra and other orchestras here in the area, after earning my Master's degree at the Royal Academy of Music, and my BM at University of Maryland, studying pedagogy at both institutions. I am also working currently as an assistant to a traveling violin soloist!
While balancing my performing schedule, I maintain a small teaching studio and enjoy teaching motivated musicians!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
With any new student, I want to get them as engaged in their playing as possible. I encourage my new students to synthesize information from as many different senses as possible (touch, sight, hearing) as a means to filter what makes their playing great, and how to improve on their progress.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters in Violin Performance from he Royal Academy of Music, where I had additional studies in Baroque performance and Viola. I completed an extra pedagogy module to earn a Licentiate of the Royal Academy. I earned my B.Mus. at University of Maryland.
I have taught at music studios and privately for over 10 years. My students have had success from Youth Orchestra placement, All-State auditions, college auditions, recitals, examinations/juries, and more. I am invested in my students' well-being and long-term growth, musically and personally. I look forward to our journey together through music!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge a flat rate of 75/hr for lessons, before travel.
No dire financial need should keep a willing and engaged musician from learning the violin. I can offer discounts on a case by case basis.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have experience teaching beginners from age 6 all the way to adult beginners. I have worked with intermediate and conservatory-track violinists, and enjoy challenging these students to bring out their best musicianship!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
The week before pandemic lockdowns began, I was involved in a powerful performance of Verdi's Requiem. The piece itself is quite a force, and was aptly appropriate for the moment.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher who challenges your comfort zone, and encourages you to think creatively to solve the obstacles ahead of you. Whether with a teacher or not, independent learners develop and realize there long-term goals more quickly. I get joy from seeing my students transform into independent and creative musicians!
