Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I am here for you to get what you want out of piano/music. I enjoy finding out who you are and what you want, and take pleasure in guiding you through a joyful learning experience. I don't have an agenda for what I "think" you should know. I believe that you have a vision and I am here to help you achieve it.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've taught at a variety of levels from begninning through adult, private lessons through college classes, and thouroughly enjoy teaching. I've received multiple degrees in music, and studied classical piano with the pianist for the Dallas Symphony. In many cases, I have found students who come to me after having taken lessons with someone else, and who are looking to move forward towards their own interests. I am well versed in composition, jazz, classical theory, music for film. I can take you in just about whatever direction you want to go.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Generally I ask for $80/hour, however I may be negotiable.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching private piano lessons in the 90's. I then taught for the Chicago Public Schools for five years, after which I returned to school to receive my Masters and PhD in Music Composition. Currently, I teach private lessons as well as various classes at De Paul University including EDM and the Art Of Electronic Music, and Commercial Music Production.
