About

I graduated from Illinois State University with a BFA in music. I don't use a cookie-cutter approach, rather I strive to tailor the material to meet each student's individual needs. I want my students to have a firm understanding of the actual grammar and inner workings of music as a language, the guitar as the voice. I have been teaching students of all ages and musical backgrounds for over ten years. I am currently playing in 3 bands and have also performed as a soloist.

I have a passion for sharing my love and knowledge of music with others. It is a great feeling to assist in someone else's personal empowerment. I believe that when someone learns to play an instrument it will forever be a source of intrinsic happiness and will provide a consistent series of attainable personal goals throughout their lives. If I can have a hand in unlocking that in someone, I'm grateful.

It was important to me to find a teacher who was a good fit for my learning style since I knew nothing about music. My goal is to learn to play folk guitar, and Jason tailors his lessons to fit my needs perfectly!
It is an incredibly rewarding experience, and Jason is also teaching me some theory and understanding of music. Jason is a teacher who is extremely patient, encouraging, and continuously inspires me to feel confident in what I am learning - and at a pace that works for me. Just a few months ago I was clueless! Now, I am playing songs at home and enjoying myself totally! It’s always easier to learn when fun is involved, and I am having a lot of fun learning more and more! Jason’s teaching method, knowledge of music, and expertise with the guitar, are all incredible! As soon as my lesson ends, I am already looking forward to the next one!

Jason goes through guitar theory in a way that you can understand it clearly. He will work with you and write down on graph and music paper what he is explaining so you can go home and practice it. I had zero music knowledge when I started guitar lessons and Jason has helped me learn and have fun playing. Highly recommend Jason for beginner or experienced guitar lessons.

My Son 15 has been working with Jason for exactly a year now and has thoroughly enjoyed every lesson. He has come so far within this year. As his parent I am extremely happy with Jason, he is patient, he communicates well, and always flexible if we cannot make our schedule time he will try to get us in another day to get my Sons lesson in for the week. Extremely happy! Five stars for Jason and so glad we found him!!

Extremely knowledgeable in music theory. Did a great job of getting an old guy broken out of the pentatonic box!
Its rare to find a guitar instructor as knowledgeable as Jason and willing to work with weird schedules.
If you looking to learn guitar, Jason is your guy!

    Frequently asked questions

After an initial phone consultation with a potential student I work on tailoring a personalized approach that we will apply to meet their individual needs and learning style. Much of your progress will depend on your motivation to practice the material between lessons. Regular lessons are important for instilling a routine check-up to encourage you to do the work necessary to progress.

I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Music from Illinois State University, where I was on a guitar scholarship. There I studied classical guitar and guitar pedagogy (how to TEACH guitar). I'm an actively performing musician with over ten years of teaching experience.

I had my first students shortly after graduating high school. I went on to study guitar on scholarship at Illinois State University where I focused on music theory, guitar pedagogy, piano, music history, composition, and conducting.
