Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Determine their level of playing ability. If they are beginners, great. I will find the lesson material most appropriate to their age. If they have already played I can either continue with the methods they have been using or put them in another one which I think is more appropriate.
I try to make the lessons as enjoyable as possible for both the student and the teacher.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Arts with a music major from Knox College, a Master of Music and Ph.D. (Doctorate) in music from Northwestern University.
Many years of teaching experience at all ages and educational levels. (Elementary, Junior High, High School, College and Privately. Have been very successful school orchestra director with many awards and state championships.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$18.00 for a half-hour lesson (once a week).
How did you get started teaching?
I have been in music since third grade so I got my college degrees in music so I could go into teaching.
What types of students have you worked with?
EVERY AGE. I prefer ages of about 7-18. I do not want students under 6. I will also teach adults.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
We have two recitals a year, usually with a theme. The last one was music froms Movies and Musicals. Before that we had a Christmas recital and before that a recital of Patriotic music. One of my recitals was a duet recital. Very successful.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who is patient, but somewhat demanding and who tries to make the experience fun. It is important to me that the student become a good note reader as they progress.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are their goals. How much time is required. Let the teacher know other things of interested to them.
