Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I want them to like the music so we discuss the lesson plan in the beginning. Students often request the music.
Lessons will focus on performance, theory, sight reading, and tone quality.
As stated below, lessons are online. I've found this to be preferable and I can show the student how to play the keyboard and play with them. It is very easy to have a conversation and it is the same one-on-one instruction. A plus side is it is not necessary to travel in bad weather and the time saved.
Students that transfer from a previous teacher keep their music book until ready to move on. I order the books and you pay for them with the music lesson payment.

No lessons on Sunday. Saturday lessons, when time is available, are $30 per half hour.
How did you get started teaching?
During Music School, the College asked Dr White to teach in the elementary school age program. Meanwhile neighbors and friends requested lessons for their children. As stated above I began lessons at 7 years old and was later well known as a local performer.
What types of students have you worked with?
A few children have been autistic. Most young beginners start from 6 to 9 years old. Most of them are average and above school students. Several of my students took lessons until they went off to college.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
The Afternoon of Music Affair at the Yountsville Mill. Varied musical artists performed in the formal garden of the beautiful Yountsville Mill Inn.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Try to arrange a time that will not be interupted with school athletics. Use online option so lessons will not be lost.
Lately, piano lessons have been online, from my home piano to the students. I have found this to be extremely beneficial. Schedules can be a little more flexible, there is less distraction from adjacent music rooms and less noise, I can teach in more detail and demonstrate the correct techniques to the student. My students and their parents have been very happy with the lessons, I have found many advantages and preferable to studio lessons.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Be honest about your needs and discuss them with your teacher in the beginning. Make sure you have an acceptable piano for practice.
