Ben Davis Jazz Piano Lessons
About
I love sharing the gift and knowledge of jazz, particularly improvisation. To me, there is nothing more liberating in music than to be put on the spot and compose spontaneously in the moment, and I love seeing people's eyes light up the first time they improvise on their instrument.
Having worked with a youth orchestra as well as high school jazz musicians, I enjoy experiencing the process of the student, and watching them grow as a musician. I have taught beginning students who have never picked up an instrument before, and to then see them a few months later being able to play a short song is rewarding as a teacher.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First lessons are typically very relaxed, as I ask the student questions about themselves and what they wish to accomplish during lessons with me. My goal is to work with all my students so that they may reach their musical goals during lessons. These may range from wanting to learn for their own enjoyment to preparing for college auditions.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am currently working towards an undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies at Ball State University, and plan to pursue a graduate degree soon upon completion. I have been studying under accomplished musicians, such as Dr. Scott Routenberg and Mr. Mark Buselli. These studies have included lessons in improvisation, composition, arranging, theory, history, and pedagogy.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I offer both half-hour and hour long lessons to my students, depending on their interest level and amount of practice time available during the week. I charge $15 for half-hour lessons, and $25 for hour lessons. I accept payment through cash, check, Venmo, and PayPal.
There are two payment plan options available:
1. The student or their parent/guardian pays weekly, ahead of each lesson ($15 per week for half-hour lessons, $25 per week for hour lessons).
2. The student or their parent/guardian pays monthly at a discounted price ($50 per month of half-hour lessons, $80 per month of hour lessons).
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students ranging from beginners (~10 years old) to adults. Many of these students tend to have little to no experience in music, though some have had a vast knowledge of music.
