Teaching is a vital part in my life. I started to teach private piano lessons since I was a freshman in college. I also have a two year experience of working as a group piano instructor at Illinois State University. Whether it is teaching beginners or advanced students, private lessons or group class, I think the most important responsibility of a teacher is to facilitate the learning process by providing a positive and fun environment and the mandatory tools for the students to have success and enjoyment. Teachers should motivate their students’ study, to help them develop their musical talent as well as to help them reach their individual potential.
I started to receive professional piano training at Shanghai Conservatory of Music from 2004. During the four-year schooling in the conservatory, I worked as a part time teacher teaching private piano lessons in a local music institute. I had taught beginners, intermediate, and advanced students. When teaching private lessons, my first goal is to match each student’s learning style. Each student is different. I am always flexible and using different approaches to teach different students. My second goal is to teach students how to express their emotions and communicate themselves effectively through making beautiful tones on piano. This goal can not be achieved without solid technique and the understating of the music. Therefore, helping my students build solid technique and understand the different compositional styles is another essential aspect of my private teaching.
