Holding a Doctoral degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a Master's degree from the University of Kansas both in piano performance, Dr. Chen's piano journey spans over 24 years, commencing with classically training at the age of 14.
Dr. Chen excels in various piano roles, including solo performance, education, and collaboration in chamber music, instrumental accompaniment, vocal accompaniment, and opera.
Teaching since 2015, Dr. Chen has imparted knowledge to students of all levels, from beginners to professionals, in various settings such as online, private, group, and masterclass, with an age range from 4 to 66.
Dr. Chen's teaching philosophy revolves around adapting lessons to students' musical preferences and learning methods, emphasizing artistic interpretation, tone production, healthy techniques, effective practice strategies, sight-reading, etc.

I enjoy my lessons with yezi so much!!! She is a such nice and patient teacher with very logical teaching skills! First, she has a good taste in the sounds of pieces from different periods and styles. I learned that how to adjust my hand, wrist and arm to create the sound I want. Second, she always comes up with effective practicing methods to resolve my problems. That made me not feel confused during practice. And did help me improve a lot![Useless practicing is nightmare for students:(

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First and foremost, it's crucial to acquaint yourself with the students. Understand their personalities and their background in piano learning. The teaching approaches may need to adapt based on their specific requirements and musical experience.
For beginners, the focus is on introducing music notations, rhythms, articulations, and basic techniques. They will learn introductory pieces with simple melodies and accompaniment.
At the intermediate level, students will engage in an in-depth study of intermediate piano repertoire. They'll develop a foundational understanding of musical forms, music theory, music history, and various musical genres, including classical, jazz, and popular music. Additionally, emphasis will be placed on techniques, sound production, and musical expressions, such as phrasing, voicing, and dynamic contrasts.
Advanced students will acquire an in-depth understanding of musical styles, interpretations, textures, and historical contexts within the advanced piano repertoire. We'll address technical challenges, explore various physical approaches, and progressively cultivate the artistic confidence and individuality necessary for outstanding performances.

Commenced piano studies at the age of 5. Classical training at the conservatory from age 14. Bachelor's degree in piano performance from Sichuan Conservatory of Music. Master's degree in piano performance from the University of Kansas. Doctoral degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

What types of students have you worked with?
I've taught beginners, intermediates, advanced, and piano major students in various settings, including private, online, group, and masterclass settings. My students' ages have spanned from 4 to 66 years old.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have received several scholarships, including the Ruth A Rich Scholarship, Lorraine Watson Scholarship, UMKC Assistantship Scholarship, Women's Committee Scholarship, KCMC Music Scholarship, and the Sigma Alpha Iota Scholarship. I achieved First Prize in the "Professional Artist" Category at the WPTA International Piano Competition and was recognized for the Best Performance of a Virtuoso Etude. Additionally, I won the KU Graduate Honors Recital Audition. In the Hong Kong-Asia Piano Open Competition, I received First Prizes in the Rachmaninoff Works, Chinese Works, and Liszt Works categories. Furthermore, I was awarded in the Deutscher Irmler International Piano Competition, earning recognition for Best Performance and achieving Fourth Place, and third place in the Asian Youth Music Competition.
