About

John Hedger Guitar Studio has been teaching Lexington fingers how to play for over 40 years! I offer a very comfortable step by step, organized approach to teaching guitar and offer all of the mainstream genres and styles of guitar playing: Classic Rock, Blues (my specialty), Music Theory and Composition applied to the guitar (My Masters degree is in Music Composition), some Jazz (basic chart reading, soloing over jazz changes, etc.), some Country and Folk stylings, plus my other long term specialty - Classical Guitar! However, no matter what your style of music preference is, for beginners I recommend at least 45 minute lessons in either the basic rock guitar or classical guitar direction. Students need to have some basic guitar knowledge and technique under their belts before mastering a specific style of music. There are no real shortcuts to playing any musical instrument, but in my 45 years of teaching experience I believe I can get a student to where they desire to go in the quickest amount of time...though it will take some time!

John is awesome! He created a book to follow during the lessons that you get to take home and practice with and it has helped me a lot! He will teach at whatever pace you need and make sure that you are not only strumming the right strings but doing so with the perfect posture\hand placement, which makes a difference in the sound. He also offers in person and online courses for whatever suits your needs best.

    Frequently asked questions

I initially ask all new students questions to determine which direction we will take. I might demonstrate my two basic directions 1. Rock/Blues guitar with a pick /OR/ 2. Classical guitar which may include country, ragtime, or folk fingerstyle fingerpicking.

Either direction works for beginners who have never touched a guitar and also for more advance students. I am very 'step by step' in my teaching.

I enjoy working with people and with all levels of guitar students! I definitely enjoy teaching beginners because I can get them off to a good start with solid technique and minimize the detrimental bad habits most self taught players develop. With more advance students, while I may work on any issues of technical problems they may have, and strive to "fill in the blanks" of things they may have bypassed in their previous learning - I really enjoy turning my students on to new ways of looking at guitar study and opening up their artistic potential to reach higher levels of guitar playing!
