Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I have an introductory "lesson" in which the student can get to know me and how I work. We do some evaluative activities that are a sample of how we might work together. During this time, I assess the background, dexterity, and readiness of the student.
Next, I talk with the student (and parents of younger students) about goals: what does the student want to accomplish by taking lessons? Is it general music education? Is there a certain piece of music that the student is especially motivated to learn?
Finally, I propose a course of study to reach those goals. This will include the cost of lessons, the necessity of regular practice, and relavent studio policies.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance. I have taught private and group lessons on the college level for 26 years, in addition to teaching private lessons at all age levels for 50 years.
I have played piano recitals fairly regularly throughout my life. I have also been a lifetime church musician, playing gospel, traditional and contemporary church music styles.
As a violinist, I used violin as a secondary instrument in college, playing in college ensembles and in a civic orchestra.
