Jake has been a full-time musician and educator for the last 10 years. He has a strong background in Jazz and Music Theory and is a pretty nice guy.
Most of my recent clients have been 30+ year old women. We have a practicing contest in which the winner gets a free bottle of wine. I love how cut-throat my students get! Plus, they make tremendous progress!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I ask new students what their background in music is, what their goals are, and what they hope to get out of me being their mentor. I like to meet weekly with students and expect them to have worked on materials discussed the week prior.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold both Masters and Undergraduate degrees in Music. I've been a Professor of Music since 2014 and a musician my entire life. I've performed alongside Grammy award-winning musicians and had my original music featured in films and on television. Additionally, I've authored a book on music history and am working on another. I've recently become certified in Online instruction.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Pricing for a single lesson is as follows:
30-minute lesson: $40
60-minute lesson: $80
Paying ahead of time for 4 lessons results in discounted rates:
4x 30-minute lessons: $120
4x 60-minute lessons: $240
How did you get started teaching?
Officially, I began my career as an educator during my Undergraduate studies. I taught Music Theory and Piano lessons.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from 3 years old to 90 years young. I work best with students that are driven and self-motivated. Having some background in music and a desire to learn are ideal qualities. I have a strong Jazz background, which may be ideal to the intermediate or advanced student.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have spent a lot of time, energy, and money putting out a new album with my band, "Dr. Daylight's Jazz Co." It is a collaborative album featuring many Lafayette-famous musicians, titled "Potluck." It celebrates our community and we're all very proud of it.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Do your homework! It's your time and money that you'll be spending on a mentor. Make sure they're the best fit for YOUR needs.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
"Why do I want to learn about music/play the piano?"
"What do I want to do with my newfound or improved skills?"
"Will this be a priority, or like a gym membership that I don't use?"
