I never thought at the start of this journey that Id be playing classical music on a mandolin, but often, it really fits, and in general, its helped to develop a kind of musicianship that I find I can apply to anything else I want to play. Adam is a knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructor about music and music history. He supports a number of group projects (focusing on several different styles including classical, Celtic, and Klezmer) for students, which are an excellent way to learn.

Adam is great. I look forward to my lessons with him every week. I am currently studying mandocello with Adam. He makes our lessons productive and fun. Adam is really good at emphasizing correct technique, and explaining the history / origin of new songs when he introduces them. I feel like through my lessons with Adam, I am learning good technique as well as music theory which I never picked up (or maybe resisted picking up) as a classical music student.

I wanted to learn how to play mandolin as an adult, and Mr. Sweet was patient with my learning and lack of time to practice. He is patient, kind, funny and full of good suggestions. He works with me and helps me figure out what I need to do in order to play well. I have done lessons both in person and on Slack! He’s an awesome teacher!

Adam is an incredibly knowledgable, kind, and patient instructor who has completely redefined the way I approach the mandolin. I highly recommend him as an instructor.
He manages to walk a line where I feel like I’m in control of the pace and contents of the lessons, but at the same time he is always ready with recommendations or suggestions to guide me. And I don’t feel like his suggestions are out of a book...he is really good at assessing where I’m at in my playing, how I could improve, and what I realistically have time for in any given week, and he specifically tailors the contents of the lesson to suit my particular requirements.
We get into serious music in our lessons, but the atmosphere is always relaxed and I appreciate his sense of humor. And I also appreciate his holistic approach...we cover way more than I ever expected to: music theory, music history, technique, how to get the most out of my practice sessions, and what to think about when I do.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I start with a new student, my first step is to learn about their goals—whether they want to play classical violin, traditional fiddle styles, or just explore music for fun. We talk about their musical background (if any), their interests, and what inspires them. From there, I create a personalized lesson plan that balances technique, repertoire, and music theory in a way that fits their learning style.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied classical violin from an early age and later expanded into traditional fiddle styles, including Irish, Scottish, and American folk. Over the years, I’ve trained with professional violinists and fiddlers, performed in a wide variety of ensembles, and built a career both as a performer and teacher.
In addition to my playing experience, I’ve spent decades teaching students of all ages, which has given me a deep understanding of how to adapt lessons to different learning styles. I continue to study new teaching methods and repertoire so I can give my students the best of both classical technique and traditional fiddle playing.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Yes, I keep my pricing straightforward and consistent. I offer lessons in 30-, 45-, or 60-minute sessions, and students can choose the option that best fits their schedule and goals. Rates are:
30 minutes – $50 per lesson
45 minutes – $70 per lesson
60 minutes – $80 per lesson
I also offer discounted monthly packages for students who commit to regular weekly lessons. Online and in-person lessons are priced the same.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching music because I love sharing the joy of playing violin and fiddle with others. Early in my career, I began giving lessons to friends and younger students, and I quickly realized how rewarding it is to help someone progress and gain confidence with their instrument. Over time, I built a structured teaching approach that blends technique, musicality, and fun, and I’ve been teaching students of all ages ever since.
What types of students have you worked with?
I’ve worked with students of all ages, from young children just starting out to adults picking up the violin or fiddle for the first time. My students include beginners with no prior experience, intermediate players looking to improve technique and repertoire, and advanced students preparing for performances or auditions. I also teach students interested in classical violin, traditional fiddle styles, and everything in between, tailoring lessons to each individual’s goals and learning style.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A recent event I really enjoyed was a local fiddle jam session I attended with some of my students. It was wonderful to see everyone—from beginners to more experienced players—coming together to make music, share tunes, and encourage each other. Moments like that remind me why I love teaching: music isn’t just about technique, it’s about connection, creativity, and having fun together.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
When looking for a violin or fiddle teacher, I would advise finding someone who listens to your goals and adapts lessons to your learning style. It’s important to choose a teacher who balances technique, musicality, and enjoyment, so you feel challenged but also motivated. Don’t be afraid to ask about their teaching experience, approach, and whether they can support the specific style or repertoire you’re interested in. The right teacher should make learning fun, rewarding, and tailored to you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Before reaching out to a teacher, students should think about a few key questions:
Goals: What do you want to achieve—learning songs for fun, improving technique, performing, or mastering a particular style?
Experience: Are you a complete beginner, or do you have some background?
Learning Style: Do you prefer structured lessons, learning by ear, or a mix of both?
Schedule & Commitment: How often can you realistically take lessons, and for how long?
Preferred Style or Genre: Are you interested in classical, folk/fiddle, or a combination?
Being clear on these points will help both the student and teacher create lessons that are productive, enjoyable, and tailored to your needs.
