Helen sparked a love of music in our daughter. Her teaching style is both creative and disciplined, providing inspiration and structure for a child to musically thrive. Our daughter has learned both Suzuki method and traditional fiddle songs from Helen. The Newell family is known as movers and shakers in the fiddle community of Maine. Helen is carrying that tradition forward with fresh perspective and advanced classical technique. I highly recommend Helen as a violin and fiddle teacher to students at various stages in their musical development.

Helen was very professional and affordable. She brought a great deal of enthusiasm and experience to her teaching experience. Even though she is very busy she was always flexible with her schedule. One thing that meant the most was when she would share my learning experience with both me and my parents by filming me while I played. This helped me see areas in which I needed to work and also helped my parents see what we work on in practice and also the progress I was making. I loved working with Helen and hope I get the chance to do it again if she comes back to Maine this summer.

She is patient, kind, smart and enthusiastic about teaching. Helen is passionate about each students learning at their own pace and level for technique, theory and playing tunes. Im an adult learner though Ive also seen her work with children and am really impressed by her patience and love of working the little ones, too! Anyone would be lucky to have Helen for a teacher.

    Frequently asked questions

Depending on the level of the student, we always set a ground basis for technique and also explore the different types of repertoire that student is interested in. All my students work on technique, but I am more open to the area of repertoire based on each person's goals.

I have over 17 years of personal experience in classical training and folk music. I also have taken multiple teaching methods classes through my training as a musician via Berklee College of Music and Ithaca College. I also have over 4 years of teaching experience, both group teaching and private lessons.

My standard pricing system is 60 an hour, 30 for 30 minutes, 45 for 45. I can do 30 minute, 45, or an hour time slots. I usually will go overtime for no extra charge. But I also operate on a sliding scale to take into account the financial needs of my students so I can be as inclusive as possible!

I started playing violin at the age of 3. My whole family plays violin and my mother is an amazing violin teacher. I have adopted her philosophy and adapted it into my own studio practice. I began teaching in 2016 with my very first student! Since then I've taught students from ages 3 to over 50! I have many different approaches that can adapt to a studen'ts needs and I strongly believe in a relationship between classical and contamporary music. I am a teacher at Maine Fiddle Camp in the summers, and am working on building a large studio in Boston of motivated, excited students, no matter the age or ability. (More about my philosophy and bio are on my website at helennewell.com)

I work with all ages, all levels, and I want my teaching to be accessible to all, which is why I use a sliding scale for pricing when needed!

Try different people out! I always offer the first lesson free because teaching is a very personal experience. We have to have a great connection in order for it to work! Just jump in, test the waters, and have fun!
