Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Depending on the level of the student, we always set a ground basis for technique and also explore the different types of repertoire that student is interested in. All my students work on technique, but I am more open to the area of repertoire based on each person's goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have over 17 years of personal experience in classical training and folk music. I also have taken multiple teaching methods classes through my training as a musician via Berklee College of Music and Ithaca College. I also have over 4 years of teaching experience, both group teaching and private lessons.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard pricing system is 60 an hour, 30 for 30 minutes, 45 for 45. I can do 30 minute, 45, or an hour time slots. I usually will go overtime for no extra charge. But I also operate on a sliding scale to take into account the financial needs of my students so I can be as inclusive as possible!
How did you get started teaching?
I started playing violin at the age of 3. My whole family plays violin and my mother is an amazing violin teacher. I have adopted her philosophy and adapted it into my own studio practice. I began teaching in 2016 with my very first student! Since then I've taught students from ages 3 to over 50! I have many different approaches that can adapt to a studen'ts needs and I strongly believe in a relationship between classical and contamporary music. I am a teacher at Maine Fiddle Camp in the summers, and am working on building a large studio in Boston of motivated, excited students, no matter the age or ability. (More about my philosophy and bio are on my website at helennewell.com)
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with all ages, all levels, and I want my teaching to be accessible to all, which is why I use a sliding scale for pricing when needed!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Try different people out! I always offer the first lesson free because teaching is a very personal experience. We have to have a great connection in order for it to work! Just jump in, test the waters, and have fun!
