About

Customers should hire me because I understand that culminating a student's sense of excitement about the guitar is the best way to get results. That motivation is the main force that drives the desire to practice and hence get better. In addition to maintaining that sense of excitement I have always strived to organize and streamline the lesson material as much as possible without dumbing it down. I have roughly 15 years as a teacher in college, and I have seen how students can benefit from a clearly thought-out lesson plan. Sometimes they surprise themselves when they discover that they are actually good at these things!

I have always crafted my lessons with the student's goals in mind and include material related directly to those goals or to support the skills necessary. With beginners I try to get the student to the point of being able to play something early on so that they will be motivated to practice. I avoid assigning rote exercises that seem to have no relevance to the students' goals. I enjoy helping people understand and master a complicated topic such as playing guitar, when they understand that it is not out of their reach.

As your guitar instructor I will keep the lessons fun and relevant and will teach good practice habits. You can rest assured that you will get the music theory necessary to take your passion for guitar to the next level.

Steve took me from knowing nothing about guitar to being able to play simple songs in only a few lessons. He taught the fundamentals of notes and chords with equal emphasis on the fun of learning songs. Steve’s lessons are engaging and rewarding, he is prompt and keeps to schedule very well.

    Frequently asked questions

    1. Determine goals (eg "learn to play songs" or "learn to read music"). Some students may not know what exactly they want to learn, others have more specific goals. I can provide suggestions or a curriculum if desired.

    2. Depending on student's experience, develop lessons to help students get the skills necessary to achieve goals

    3. The first few lessons emphasize proper technique and some musical concepts related to the guitar.

    4. The first lesson should include a song and there will always be songs that demonstrate the concepts being taught.

I began learning guitar at age 11 and have continued to learn new things all the time. In 2021 I completed the online Professional Guitar program at Berklee College of Music in Boston. In addition to formal training I have been playing in local band for the past 20 years and I believe I have some valuable lessons to share from this experience. My training was originally classical guitar, but I soon branched out into acoustic and electric guitar.
My standard prices are 30 Minutes - $30 45 Minutes - $40 60 minutes - $50 New students can ask about a trial lesson, to determine if I am a good match for the student and to get a sense of what the student might like to learn.
Ever since I have sat in front of a teacher I have evaluated whether I could have explained the subject more concisely or in a different spirit. My first experience teaching came when I was in high school to tutor match to elementary school children. My real experience teaching came about in graduate school teaching introductory math courses. I taught steadily for about 15 years. Two years ago I began teaching guitar to family friends or whoever wanted to learn, and last year I began getting paid to teach guitar from this website.
I have had students as young as 8 years old, but mostly my teaching experience has been with adults who are working a main job and want to learn guitar as a hobby.
