About

My teaching approach:

I taught at the Thames Valley Music School in New London, CT for two years. I also teach at Deerfield Academy Summer Arts Camp, where I've been a music instructor for six years. I am a classically trained guitarist, but I perform regularly with rock bands and folk groups as well. I teach classical methods and repertoire, as well as folk, pop and rock styles for both acoustic and electric guitar. When I am not teaching, I am a freelance recording engineer. Thus, I often incorporate recording and production processes into my lessons, both to inspire my students and to measure their progress.

My influences are:

My influences are numerous and varied, but I love the music of Andres Segovia, Lindsey Buckingham, Thurston Moore, Nels Cline, Jack White, Annie Clark, George Harrison, Kevin Drew ... and so much more!

My guitar lessons take place in:

Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:

I am relatively flexible with my weekly schedule, so I can generally fit in lessons between 10am and 6:30pm on weekdays. I'm always happy to discuss what works best for the student though, so let's chat!

Guitar Techniques:

Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Fingerstyle, Vocal Accompaniment, Performance, Reading Music, Music Theory, Song Writing, Recording and Production, Guidance In Equipment Selection

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

The most important thing is to get to know each other! It will be my priority to understand what the student's interests are and what he or she is hoping to accomplish as a guitar player. From there we can go over the student's previous experience, play some guitar together, and figure out a good starting place that matches his or her abilities and interests.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

Learning an instrument is hard work, but should always be fun, engaging, and creative! I think it's important to come at teaching from an angle that interests the student. I put forth my methods, techniques, and exercises in order to learn music that the student feels passionately about. Students and I will set weekly goals to achieve a longer term end result, be that a Villa Lobos prelude or a John Mayer song complete with vocals and a solo!

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

With learning an instrument, you get out as much as you put in-- hard work and focus are indeed important. However, whether you're hoping to be a professional musician someday or are just interested in the guitar as a hobby, having a passion and love for music is the most important thing!
