John is an amazing teacher. I came in with little to no experience in guitar and instantly felt comfortable with his knowledge and teaching abilities. Group lessons are awesome allowing you to bounce ideas off each other and just jam in general. If you’re interested in learning this great instrument I would definitely reach out to John.

My son walks out of his lesson with a smile on his face and a ‘that was awesome’ comment. He is also motivated to practice at home.

My daughter had taken lessons previously and knew how to read music, however, she was not proficient or confident. Within a few short months of taking lessons, her skill set really took off. She is 17, but what she told me she loves most about the program is that she takes groups lessons with people of all different ages and skillsets. It does not matter if you or your child has previous experience or can even read music, his lessons are extremely effective and enjoyable. It is a great program for any age or skill set.

What started as a
“Pop up”
On FB for a “free introductory guitar lesson” has become a twice weekly learning experience!
Spurred on by a gorgeous guitar given to me 20 years ago by my brother , Richard ( now deceased), I have been, and continue to be, immensely impressed by Jon’s warm and supportive instruction method, despite an almost 50 year age spread between us students !!!! Jon is funny , down to earth, very positive in his approach to reaching ALL his students! Whether we read music, tablature, or nothing at all….. and his beautiful , bright, and airy studio is equipped with all kinds of electronic equipment to “assist “ us in our learning experience!
I strongly recommend Jon and the Reading School of Guitar- to EVERYONE who has even the slightest interest in playing !!!

Lessons with Jon are a lot of fun and always a highlight of my week. Jon makes a point of learning about his students musical interests, and incorporating that into their curriculum. His lesson plans and practice guidance have absolutely improved my guitar playing. Jon is a great guitar player and an easygoing but also focused & organized instructor.

I have been taking classes with Jon for about three months now and when I started, I was completely new at guitar. However, Jons teaching style and classes made me feel very welcome and comfortable as he catered towards people of all skill levels and ages. Despite not knowing much when I first joined, my confidence and improvement in skill at the guitar has overall made his classes very worthwhile! I highly recommend his lessons to anyone with an interest at learning the guitar.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
A new student will meet with a teacher for a free introductory session. In this session, students will receive training to overcome a specific challenge they are having on the guitar. Short-term and long-term goals will be discussed and an assessment will be made to determine the best learning path and class enrollment solution. Students will receive special music content upon enrollment and access to a secure student portal to access content, schedule classes, and connect with teachers online.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Open Mic Night at the First Congregational Church in Reading. Hosted by Reading School of Guitar. It's a free, multi-generational, fun-filled community event!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Don't settle for a 30-minute one-on-one lesson. It's an antiquated teaching model that doesn't help students learn to use musical skills. Music is a language that must be practiced in a group setting with other musicians to become proficient.
Love your teacher. Personality is key! If you don't love going to your lesson every week, you'll lose momentum and eventually stop altogether.
Interview your teacher prospects.
A great player doesn't automatically make a great teacher!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How long have you been teaching the guitar?
How many students have you helped?
What is your area of expertise?
Do you have a degree in music?
What other instruments do you play?
Why do you teach music?
If you could do anything with music, what would you do?
