About this pro

I have enjoyed helping students of all ages reach their fullest potential and simultaneously find lasting joy and excitement in music. I think these qualities are so important for anyone trying to improve their musical skills! I utilize techniques from the Suzuki Method, Dalcroze, Orff and Kodaly, and follow ABRSM standards of achievement in order to prepare students for musical mastery. I enjoy passing on all of the knowledge I possibly can to my students, crafting our lessons to their individual learning styles and comfort levels. Additionally, it is my pleasure to offer seasonal recital opportunities for interested students, which take place at Music Land in Bel Air, MD.

I have been a professional saxophonist and teaching artist for 10 years. I studied Jazz Saxophone at the Manhattan School of Music and then William Paterson University, where I graduated with a Bachelor's degree. I recieved my Master of Science Degree in Music Education from Towson University. I have performed original music with my jazz group for the last 10 years across New York, New Jersey, Maryland and D.C. I have had the good fortune of being able to study with some of the worlds greatest musicians including Mulgrew Miller, Christian McBride, Rich Perry, Chris Potter, Seamus Blake and Donny McCaslin.

Miguel is very friendly. He has quickly formed a rapport with my daughter and she enjoys her lessons immensely. I look forward to seeing her skills improve

Miguel is a very humble, nice, knowledgeable, and professional individual. My 11 year old daughter was fearful of having her first saxophone lesson, as she thought her teacher would be mean and unpleasant. However, once she met & received instructions from Miguel, her fear was gone and she was & is extremely excited to have him as her instructor. His poise and professionalism made me, as a father, feel very comfortable and reassured as to his ability to not only provide instructions for my daughter on the sax, but myself on the keyboard.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Our first few lessons are focused mainly on discovery. I want learn how my student thinks, what their goals and motivations are - in order create a plan for getting them to the next level! Whether its a classical approach using time tested methods, or a plan focused less on reading music and more on playing by ear, I have the experience to show someone how to cultivate their artistic abilities from day 1 all the way to a professional level.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Master of Science Degree in Music Education from Towson University

Bachelors Degree in Jazz Performance from William Paterson University

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

2019 rates for in-home lessons are: (weekly)

$35 per 30 minute lesson,

$50 per 45 minute lesson,

$70 per 1 hour lesson.

How did you get started teaching?

Teaching music has always been a passion of mine. As an undergraduate student at William Paterson, I began to teach young students and older beginners. It has been about 7 years since I started working with my first students and I have loved every minute of it!

What types of students have you worked with?

I am comfortable teaching all age groups - from ages 5 to 75 (believe it or not!) I have experience teaching students on the autism spectrum and with other special needs.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

My advice is to find a teacher who will be compassionate and patient, while pushing you toward your highest musical potential. I practice extreme patience and kindness with all my students, as I hold these qualities to be some of the most virtuous for life's great journey.
