What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We start with your goals, then design a plan to get you to where you want to be.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have doctorate and masters degrees in music composition from The Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University, and a bachelors degree in music education from Lipscomb University.
How did you get started teaching?
Like many in the music field, it all started with inspiration from a teacher.
What types of students have you worked with?
My current composition students write in a range of styles including music aligned with the western classical tradition, electronic sound design, and popular music styles such as singer-songwriter, Hip Hop, and EDM. My voice and piano students study a range of styles. Currently my studio includes students as young as 6 and as old as 56.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Ask questions to make sure your teacher is the right fit for you. But, also be open to exploring new ideas, techniques, methods, etc.--you will become a better musician.
