Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first lesson is an opportunity to get to know my students, what kind of music they like, and why they want to learn guitar. I also want to listen to the student play, even if they haven't had any formal lessons. And of course it is a way for the students and parents to get to know me, and decide if I am the right teacher for them.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied under a jazz major who was an incredible musician and teacher. She instilled in me an encyclopedic knowledge of music theory. Since completing my first 2 years of lessons, I continued to learn on my own. I believe that in order to be the best you can be, you must continue to learn. I have now been playing for over 24 years, but I have never stopped learning.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I offer 1 hour In Home Lessons as well as Live Video Lessons. The rate is $40 per hour for Carroll County residents, $45 per hour elsewhere. I also offer my students many incentives and ways to save money.
How did you get started teaching?
After playing for more than 10 years, I decided that I wanted to share my knowledge and experience with others. I already had some teaching experience (different subject), and just decided that teaching music was something I wanted to do.
What types of students have you worked with?
I will teach anyone who wants to learn. I have worked with students from 7 to 78 years of age. I teach a lot of beginners, but I also work with experienced musicians. With my vast knowledge of music theory, I can help anyone become a better musician.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently had a young student, about 11 years old, who wrote his first song. He was really happy about writing his first song. And I know he was proud of what he had accomplished. I was very proud of him too. This is what makes learning an instrument so great for kids. As they continue to improve as a musician, they start to discover their own creativity and begin to play and write songs that they didn't think they could. And these kind of accomplishments really help to build confidence and self esteem. To me, that is what music is all about. It gives you a positive and constructive activity that helps you discover your own creativity and be able to express yourself through music.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher with experience and a true passion for music and teaching. Look for someone who is patient and has a system of teaching that makes learning the guitar fun and easy. You also want a teacher who will focus on helping the students achieve their goals.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Are you passionate about music? Why do you want to learn guitar? Are you willing to make the commitment to the learning process? Do you have the dedication to practice every day? It is important that potential students understand that learning the guitar is a lot of hard work. You must be committed to a learning process that can take years. And you must have the dedication to practice every single day. If you don't practice, you will not make any progress, and you will not last long as a student.
