About this pro

32 years experience teaching in-home music lessons to students from age 4 to 84...Music is my life, i do it full time, and i make it FUN for my students. 40 years as a performing musician in the Washington, D.C. metro area. Long time member of the American Federation of Musicians. Very good with children and problem students. Holistic and real world methodology prepares students for: school band, ensemble playing (rock, jazz bands, etc.), note reading, music theory, interpretation, ear training. Most styles taught, with an emphasis on what the student really enjoys, which is the basis of my success...Music major (brass, guitar) in college (Dean's List), and a vast amount of performance experience enables me to teach 7 different instruments in many different styles.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

First, i assess the skill level of the student. Then i determine what kind of music the student likes and we move in that direction, employing a methodology that is age and skill appropriate.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Music Major in college, brass and guitar performance, dinner theater, pedagogy seminars, 40 years performing in small and large ensembles, from bluegrass, blues, jazz (straight ahead, fusion), big band, rock (classic, progressive), classical, and wedding bands...

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Tuition rates are variable, depending on 30 min. or 45 min. lessons. 10% group discount for 2 or more students in one home. 5th lesson in any calendar month is FREE.

How did you get started teaching?

My father was a music teacher and played in the U.S. Marine Band for 32 years (played at the White House for 7 different Presidents)...I was the manager of the Robinson Music Studios in Bethesda, Md. from 1983-84, and have been teaching private in-home music lessons on a full time basis ever since...

What types of students have you worked with?

i have worked with students of all ages, from beginner to advanced. I succeed with problem students where others have failed. Experience with special needs students (handicapped, learning disabilities, Aspergers, etc.)

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

When a proud student gives a good performance of a difficult piece they've been working on, that makes being a teacher worthwhile...

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Teachers who charge less generally will not be as experienced. You expect to pay a little more for someone with a proven track record and many years experience, especially one who comes to your home. it's getting harder and harder to find teachers willing to come to your home, which is what i do, and i pride myself on my punctuality...
