About

I am an MTNA Nationally Certified Teacher of Music with 30 years of experience. I have been on the adjunct piano faculty at Shepherd University since 1998. I teach at both the Shepherd University Preparatory Program and at my home studio in Martinsburg WV. My students have earned awards and recognition in West Virginia Music Teachers Association competitions. Currently, I teach a range of beginning students (as young as 4 years old) to collegiate level students and adults.

In addition to my degree from the University of Iowa, I did some doctoral work at the Catholic University of America in the field of Piano Pedagogy. Currently, I serve as President for the West Virginia Music Teachers Association. During the past 15 years, I have served as adjudicator for the Piano Guild, and MTNA in various events throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

My students do yearly assessment programs through either Piano Guild or RCM's Music Development Program, as well as numerous MTNA sponsored activities.

Frequently asked questions

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I want to get to know them and the musical skills they possess. I will assess rhythmic, aural, and reading skills in the first lesson along with a technique assessment of a five finger pattern (or scales, arpeggios, chords, etc. if the student has previous experience). I also want to know what styles of music that the student likes best and what their motivation is for learning to play piano.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have over 30 years of teaching experience with all ages and levels. Music Teachers National Association recognizes me as a National Certified Teacher of Music. I have Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Music as well as extensive post-graduate work in the field of Piano Pedagogy. 20 years of my experience is as adjunct collegiate instructor.
