Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I try to find out what the student is interested in learning. I also stress the importance of learning as much as you can about music and the guitar.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been giving private lessons for over thirty years. I have studied with many instructors and have a masters and bachelors degree from Eastern Michigan University where I studied classical guitar, music composition, music theory and creative writing. Also, I have had years of experience as a band leader and music director (at Washtenaw Community College).
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are usually either 30 minutes or 45 minutes for more advanced students. I do have student discount rates. THe rates are reasonable.
How did you get started teaching?
I had some good private teachers as a youth. I started playing guitar at age 9 and quickly became serious about music as a profession.
What types of students have you worked with?
All ages (4 years to 75 years old). It is a plus to start at a very young age. However, with regular practice progress can be made at any age. Styles I have taught range from classical to jazz, rock, blues, folk county and more. I mostly teach in the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti area but also have a location in Saline at Dennis's Music Store.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
We have student recitals three to four times a year at Washtenaw Community College where I teach a jazz combo and guitar class. The most recent recital event went well.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure that you are ready to practice consistently and have some time set aside for it. Also, you should be commited towork on the lessons. A teach with many years of experience is benificial.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Styles and types of music are important. Rock, blues and county music can be more basic. Jazz and classical music are generally more advanced and require more technique.
