About

I have 29 years of full time teaching experience and focus on making learning your instrument fun. I use music you like as the basis for learning and also teach many related skills like ear training, music theory, improvisation and music technology. In addition I perform with bands regularly and can show you how to be good performer and band member.

I love sharing the gift of music with others. I've had the privilege of working with hundreds of students closely over the years and the relationships I've developed are priceless. I'm currently in a working band with my former students and am teaching the kids of students I've had in the past. Watching someone grow as a musician is amazing!

First of all, if you are looking for a guitar teacher who really knows the instrument both theoretically as well as practically, then I assure you that Steve is that. He has helped me enormously in my journey to become an actual musician.
In addition to being knowledgable, he is supportive of my efforts and never makes me feel small or less then.
If you decide to work with Steve you can expect that he can accurately assess where you are musically and help you move forward toward your musical goals.
    Sincerely
    Bob Eardley

starts with where do you want to go and what do you need to learn to get there. Steve is kind and a good listener. I also really appreciate
the fact that he knows his subject and can effectively explain the material.

    Frequently asked questions

First I try to get to know my students and their musical goals. I will ask about their past musical experience (if any) and what made them want to get lessons. This helps me know where to start and ensure they get the most out of the lessons. I really try to tailor the lessons to the students individual needs.

I have been a student of music nearly all of my life. I started on the violin at age six and went on to learn piano, cello and trumpet as well. I played in band, orchestra and sang in choir all through school. At age 12 I was introduced to the guitar by my uncle who was great lover of music. I fell in love with the instrument and have not stoppped playing since. I attended Berklee College of Music in the late 80s where I recieved some of the most valuable musical training of my life. The instructors and other students I met there were very influential in forming the musician I have become.

Currently lesson are $20 / half hour or $40 / hour and meet weekly.

I started teaching part time in Boston while I was at Berklee. When I moved to Grand Rapids in the early 90s I began teaching at Middletons Music and my schedule fillled up quickly. Before I knew it I was teaching full time!
