What is your typical process for working with a new student?

To begin, I assess the student's experience, and enthusiasm level. I will also ask the student who any influences are, what they hope to gain, etc.

From here, we would typically approach some fundamental scale and harmony exercises, tailored to the student (Cycle of Fourths/Fifths, playing and identifying patterns, ear-training and pitch retention, 'groove' playing).
I will then work from this to develop a tailored, and dynamic lesson plan for each student.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Graduated from The University of Michigan, School of Music, Theatre, & Dance. I earned a BFA in Jazz, & Improvisation Studies with High Honors. Additionally, I earned the James B. Angell Scholar Award, given in recogniciton of a perfect academic record for multiple, consecutive semesters.

I was also student manager of both the Creative Arts Orchestra ('07-'08), and Jazz Combo Big Band ('08-'09) ensembles.

Former teaching experience includes private lessons at Southland Music ('11-'12), and the National Guitar Workshop's DayJams Rock Music Day Camp ('08).

How did you get started teaching?

I began teaching (formally) during my time at UofM. What originated as a way to earn some side-cash, developed, and evolved into something I am deeply passionate about.
