Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I often like to do a slightly longer lesson on the first lesson to introduce some of the basics to them and get some of their input. I also often have calls prior to the first lesson to discuss what they are interested in and looking to do. They are always pressure free, and you can always change your mind about your musical goals. :) It just gives us a starting goal. (Again: the goal can always be just taking lessons to learn the instrument, and I am happy to take over from there. We can always add in side projects later of things you develop an interest in. :))
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been studying music privately since I was 4 years old. I also spent 7 years at UofM studying Vocal Performance, Vocal Pedagogy, and Piano Performance.
I also have been a writer performing artist for 10 years, traveling regularly to Poland and many states within the U.S. to perform my original works as a solo artist working with an incredible band. I have performed at the USA's largest Polish Festival (Taste of Polonia) in Chicago multiple years as well as Arts Beats and Eats, more locally. I have been a recording artist for 15 years. I have managed a channel for my music including music videos. I write, compose, perform, and record/produce my own works. But I also work with and have contacts with many other talented musicians and artists in these areas that I like to run projects in, both locally and abroad.
I have taught choir classes, music performance seminars, advised in performance classes, taught Mariachi classes for a local nonprofit music program and I currently work with Music! Not Mischief, USA! Which is a local, nonprofit music education program that helps at risk youth in the local area through musical outreach, among other things. :)
I regularly attended seminars and training for music, I love to further develop myself to be of the best consistent service to my students.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $40 per 1/2 hour lesson and $75 for the hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching private lessons 13 years ago. I always knew I wanted to and both music and teaching had been strong suits and joys of mine growing up.
What types of students have you worked with?
I am glad to say many types! :)
All ages, all levels from beginner to expert, and from many backgrounds. βοΈ
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I went to a music educators conference in Vegas. I very much enjoyed meeting all the teachers and I learned so much both in the lectures and out. My favorite part, though, I'd have to say, was... performing with a famous local mariachi! ππThey were amazing. What an experience. !!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Maybe just 2 things that may not be common knowledge:
1. There are so many people out there who are great musicians, but being a great musician and being a great teacher are two different things. Preferably, you can find both. But know there is a difference. :)
2. Find someone who you vibe with. Learning with someone you like being around and feel comfortable with and who is a good communicator and is kind will be so valuable and your success learning anything.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Just ask yourself: What are your goals, how do you best learn in general, and do you get a sense that this teacher can help you with those things?
