About

My name is Robert Artinian, and I teach guitar--acoustic as well as electric. I love working with beginners & have a passion for helping students get to the next level, wherever they're at!

Unlike some teachers who use the same set of songs for every student, I take a highly-individualized & song-oriented approach to teaching. I start by asking each new student for a list of songs they personally love & hope to learn--and then we work from there ;) This way, you end up learning chords, strumming/picking patterns, scales, music theory, and other skills by learning whole songs--songs that you actually want to learn! And as we work our way through your personal song-list, your skills and confidence grow.

Sometimes in life, a little bit of help can save a whole lot of time. So just tell me where you want to go with guitar, and I'll help you get there--and get you there faster ;)

Frequently asked questions

I begin by asking each student for a list of songs they'd like to play on guitar, about their favorite bands/artists, and about their goals for guitar (whatever they might be). Then, I design a custom curriculum based on those specific interests and goals. I teach the student chords, strumming, picking, scales, music theory, and related skills by teaching them *whole songs.* So, if you take guitar from me, the songs you'll learn will basically be the songs that you yourself select--a song-list which we'll work through according to your own aptitude & development.
I myself took several years of private lessons in my youth; earned a master's degree (not music) and did other graduate work; have many years of experience in live performance; and I've taught on-and-off in some capacity since my late teens.

I actually started teaching friends of my younger brother while I was still in high school! And when I returned to Detroit and got back into music many years later, it was the most natural thing for me to do—kinda my first love, so to speak ;)
All types of students and from every background and every age group--from 7 years old to 75 years old, people with no musical background or lots of experience in music, casual players or diehards, etc. ;)
When a student who had to quit about a year ago came back in the fall and started working on their first album (at 14 years old!)… Or an an older student who’d taken guitar several different times told me they’d learned more in a year than any other time they’d taken lessons… Or probably the most common event: Just watching a new student learn their first song and realize that they can actually play guitar ;)
Find a teacher who really cares about their students and is a good fit for you & what you want to do. Finding a good fit is probably the most important thing--because learning guitar is a journey, and it's better to have someone you just "click" with!
(1) What sort of music do I want to learn on guitar? (2) How much structure do I want/need in my lessons? (3) Do I want to work from a book, follow a program designed by my teacher, or have no particular program at all?
