About
It is my goal that, regardless of what brings a student to piano lessons, each has fun with the experience and leaves with a new appreciation for music. From the beginning, I work with students and their families to establish attainable goals to help focus the instruction. I tailor the lessons to each student’s goals and abilities to ensure they have the most positive, enjoyable experience while gaining essential skills that will support them throughout life. When talent is discovered, I seek new opportunities for the student to advance in skill and grow into his or her potential. Students are consistently challenged to aim high but never forced to excel beyond their own interests or desires.

Our son has been taking lessons with Philip for 7+ years. We are so grateful for his patience and encouragement that he exhibits while teaching technically-demanding pieces to our son. He is particularing strong in developing a students technique and enabling the student to understand the mechanics of their fingers, wrists, arms, etc. As a piano teacher myself, Ive learned so much about technique by watching him teach my son; I wish I had received this kind of training while I was in high school and college. While I appreciate his strength in piano technique, he is also phenomenal at teaching musical concepts and inviting feedback from the student about their own preferences how theyd like the piece to sound. As a parent, this was important to me, as I dont want my child to be a puppet of his piano teacher, but rather someone who is equipped to be active in making musical decisions that he can use in the future. Under Philips training, he has helped my son receive recognition as the MMTA Junior Young Artist winner, Northwestern Piano Contest winner, and to be recognized in Thursday Musical and Schubert Club. He also prepared my son to complete the entire MMTA Level 11 Exam in the 9th grade. Despite all the hard work, my son has always maintained his love of piano which is in a large part due to Philips teaching style.
