What is your typical process for working with a new student?
After discussing the student's interests and goals, as well as any injuries, I introduce them to basic drills and exercises which they can practice on their own. I stress the fundamentals, proper form, and repetition to develop muscle memory, which I realize can be boring. But muscle memory is absolutely essential to perform under duress.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
While most of my training is Chinese, I also have experience in Filipino, Indonesian, and Japanese styles. I am a green level coach through USA Boxing and a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard rate is $40/hr or $25/half hr
How did you get started teaching?
After assisting my instructor with seminars and workshops throughout the Midwest, I began teaching at the Olathe YMCA before starting at KU.
What types of students have you worked with?
Most of the students I have worked with are college age with little or no experience. But occasionally I have had the opportunity to work with children or competitive athletes.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Before the pandemic, I enjoyed traveling throughout the US as well as overseas to train with different instructors.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Techniques without an understanding of the principles behind them are meaningless. The outcome of a true fight is usually determined within the first 10 seconds of initial contact, so physical fitness is only useful for competition.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What type of training do you want? There are many aspects to martial arts including art, combat, fitness, health, self defense, and sport.
