What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Generally speaking and within reason, lessons for the adult student (basically upper teenage years and beyond) are tailored to the likes, goals & objectives of the student. However, for the younger students, it is highly recommended that learning to actually "read" standard music notation be incorporated into their (already fun) lesson structure.
