About

My lessons are dynamic and fun. I'm a creative and hands-on teacher who will tap into the innate rhythm and musical spark of my students, to promote their learning.

I customize the lesson according to the student’s interest in style, goals and/or needs. I coach them to be successful in learning to make music, rather than just learning the technical aspects of singing or playing an instrument.

I believe music connects us with the most true expression of ourselves! I'm passionate about coaching folks and sharing that gift, and I love when I see my students reach that "a-ha"moment when something "clicks" and they can play or sing "that" note/song, and feel they are the music!

Mar is a phenomenal musician and music teacher. My 11 year old son began taking piano lessons 8 years ago with a different teacher. After beginning lessons with Mar, my son has found a true love for playing the piano. Mar has inspired this love in my son and now he enjoys practicing piano and is working on perfecting his skill and talent.

My whole life I’ve always had a hard time talking to people. I was always afraid of judgement and this effected the way I expressed myself to people. It’s always been a constant struggle but there was always something I leaned on that always made me happy and that was listening to music. Because of my love for music I wanted to get more invested into it and this led me to wanting to play the piano. This led me to looking for lessons and I found out about an amazing place called the Asheville School of Music and I was also introduced my teacher Mar. I’ve been extremely blessed to have Mar as my teacher because he has been amazing! He’s not only helped me with music but he’s helped me find out much about myself and has helped me get pass my fear of judgment and has taught me how to proudly be myself.

I can’t say enough great things about Mar.
Mar listened and helped my teenage son who had never even picked up an musical instrument learn how to play Fluently and now has a love, desire and passion for music. It also gave him a sense of confidence that he was lacking. Mar was an answered prayer.

Our son started with Mar when he was 8. He had worked with a different instructor previously, who had not been a good fit. We convinced him to try one more time, and his experience with Mar has been transformative. Piano has gone from a chore to something he enjoys. He is encouraged without judgement, and applies himself readily learning songs he already knows and loves. We feel grateful for the opportunity to work with Mar, and would highly recommend.

Lessons with Mar were always super fun and interactive, even when we had to go virtual. I had a great time learning and playing songs and have made noticeable progress.

    Frequently asked questions

First, I listen! I offer the space to share their interests in the chosen instrument, and verbalize their prior connection to the instrument, if beginners, any goal/plan/idea of what they want from the lessons, and learn where they're at. Then I might ask if they can play/sing anything, and or introduce a new concept depending on their level/skill. I believe in giving students -even beginners- a new song to take out of their first lesson.

While working as a music therapist with children with ASD and asperger's syndrome, I started utilizing some of the MT strategies to teach cognitive, communication, and motor skills using piano and voice. Very short after, I was teaching them musical concepts as well. I then, started incorporating these unique music therapy/education techniques derived from Music Therapy and combined with my craft as a performing artist, to teach music to folks from all walks of live.

I love coaching children and adults access their passion for music, the skills to play it, and perform it; mixing the human/artistic element with both conventional and out-the-box personalized successful strategies and techniques. I enjoy teaching piano, drums, and ukulele to small kiddos ages 3-5 yrs old as well as coaching voice, guitar and/or songwriting to teenagers and adults!
