About

Music is more than just a hobby. It is a means to heal and bring beauty to the world. I love sparking creativity in my students and helping them feel valuable and cared for in the process. Besides traditional note reading I incorporate very hands on creative components like composing and songwriting if that appeals to you. I even have a YouTube channel of all the incredible songs my students have written! I can teach many styles as well as chord chart reading. For voice, I have studied many techniques and have developed my own curriculum called the "resonation revolution." I have seen great results with these techniques.

Every day that I teach, I have to pinch myself and realize that it is not just a dream that I get paid to do this. It is my dream job! Music has been such an incredible blessing in my life with my 13 years touring as a singer songwriter. Now, I am in a season where I am passing that love and knowledge on to other people and it makes me so happy!

My son has been taking lessons, in person and virtually, from Kate for several years. Kate is encouraging, patient, and responsive to her students interests. Beginning with piano, we now incorporate singing and composing lessons as well.
Kate offers appropriate challenges and guides my son to learn and create. She is easy going and very knowledgeable about many aspects of music. We are grateful to have found her.

Kate is a joyful, thoughtful and a talented musician. She cares deeply for each of my daughters, and she rejoices in their musical abilities along with helping them to become better at piano and voice with each lesson. We are deeply grateful to have Kate Hurley as our piano teacher and voice instructor. She helps my daughters to discover their musical talents and helps them to reach their goals!

A fun, talented teacher, Kate makes exploring and practicing music a passion instead of a task. Her soulful voice and supportive techniques encourage her students with voices and skills of all types to improve themselves. She implements out-of-the-box warm-ups to help her students fully understand how to utilize different aspects of their voices. I started taking voice lessons much later (in my teens) than most people, and it was important to me to have a teacher who knew how to keep me interested. Kate is accepting and conscientious of how her teaching impacts her students, and it is clear that she cares about her job. While she taught me, I was able to go from stretching to reach a 2-octave range to confidently being able to sing 2.5-3 octaves. I am also aware of Kates efforts to teach music to children who are less privileged. I think Kate is a wonderful teacher and I highly recommend her to all students.

Frequently asked questions

I try to find out what their core desire is...what they really want to learn. I teach out of books, but I also do a lot of fun hands on theory learning which results in composing. I have a youtube channel of my student's compositions. I also teach chord chart reading and different styles of music.

I have a degree in Piano.

$25 for a half hour, $40 for 45 minutes, $50 for an hour.

I was a touring musician for 13 years. I loved it but got tired of touring. I had worked with kids and teens my entire life but never in a music setting. By a crazy set of circumstances (it is an amazing story you should ask me about it) I ended up teaching and found it was the dream job I had always been looking for!

I have taught almost every age from 2 to 82. I have also worked with students on the spectrum and special needs. I have had many home school students. I also used to teach free lessons to refugees when I lived in San Diego. I am hoping to start a program teaching low income youth free lessons here in Asheville.

I tell all my students "It's not about being perfect, it's about being brave." I even made a poster of that motto to hang on my wall! I do not demand perfection, only ask that you would be brave. If you are brave enough to take risks we will create beautiful things together!

What are your goals musically? Do you have any emotional baggage concerning performing in front of others? How can we overcome that? Where would you like to see yourself musically in a year?
