Berneice Jordan Piano Lessons

I love playing the piano and I love teaching! I've been teaching for approximately 18 years. I had one year of piano in the 3rd/4th grade. Halfway through 4th grade my family moved to another state. My mom had more advanced piano books and I taught myself by playing increasingly more difficult music. I never had any more formal piano instruction, but as an adult studied and learned much more while playing for my church. I never intended to teach piano since my training was mostly by myself.

I was the pianist for my church and a young friend who was starting college to major in piano/organ asked me to take her young students. I stepped out in faith and took her students. I loved teaching!! As people in my church heard that I was teaching, they asked me to teach their children. I only ever got students by word of mouth. I've taught more than 40 students over the years without ever advertising my services. One of my beginners went on to get her degree in piano and excelled in piano in college. She now has her own piano students in S.C..

I started giving voice lessons along the way and taught students to read soprano, alto, tenor and bass lines in music. Some of my students became pianists in their churches and some learned other instruments after piano and have made voice/instrumental CDs.

I feel that I can relate very well with my students' frustrations because of having learned on my own and having faced great frustration myself. I also understand the value and importance of being taught to play correctly because of the difficulties I experienced without a teacher. I use Faber and Faber student books and love them. Many of my students continued piano and took advanced lessons at Meredith College.

My goal has always been to help my students love piano and to learn it well. I form a friendship with each student and all my students know that I love them. I use lots of humor in teaching (most aimed at myself) and want each student to feel comfortable talking to me. I assign homework each week and go over it the next week.

I love getting to know new people and seeing students of any age learning to play the piano. It's very rewarding to me to see my students learn to play better and better and to get pleasure from playing the piano. It's even more exciting to see them use their gift to bring pleasure to others!
