Yana Sorokina

Pianist, guitarist, educator

Born in Gomel, Belarus, Yana's musical life began at birth as she was surrounded by music at family gatherings. She began formal studies on piano at age seven and began to play guitar at thirteen. A complete natural, she also joined a group playing blues and rock guitar while continuing her solfeggio studies and private classical piano at a traditional Russian music school. She later attended Minsk State Linguistic University.

Yana immigrated to the USA in 1999 and continued her Boogie-Woogie and Blues study with David Maxwell and explored Jazz with Harvey Diamond. She has fifteen years experience teaching in Boston, MA. She has taught both privately and for music schools and in stores that offer lessons. She teaches young children, adolescents and adults. Although her strict Russian training is apparent, she instills a sense of fun in music and always has her students playing songs the very first lesson.

Yana teaches a variety of styles on both piano and guitar including Jazz, Boogie-Woogie, Blues and Classical Music.

While I gave her 5 stars for being an excellent teacher, she really shocked me when I decided to pause my lessons due to cat allergies. She cursed me out and accused me of lying. I never expected this kind of behavior from a professional.

Yana is a very focused teacher with knowledge in all aspects of music performance, technique and theory. She helped me to improve my sightreading, melody playing and chord voicings. Her approach to teaching was fun yet serious as we explored jazz and classical styles. Her lessons are an investment in your musical journey!

After roughly 15+ years of teaching myself how to play guitar & piano, I decided to take my abilities to the next level. One day, after some extensive web-searching, I discovered Yana on Craigslist and decided to reach out to her. The first thing I noticed is the fact that she taught at Boston University for many years and this indicated a very high level of professionalism. Secondly, I watched a YouTube video of Yana playing boogie woogie style piano songs and quickly realized that not only is she highly advanced and proficient on the technical side of music theory, but she also plays with a lot of feeling and emotion, leading to her filling the world with life and light. Beautiful, right? One thing led to another and eventually we met up for lessons and I must say that it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. What one gets with Yana is a genius of a musician, with a quiet, humble presence that is at once both commanding and relaxing. Essentially, you’ll be learning from someone who is going to make you feel at ease, but who will never stumble with her instructions and she certainly doesn’t falter for words. Her rates are reasonable and competitive, she’s always punctual and eager to see people develop their skills. I’ve never been disappointed with her in any capacity and I would bet the same goes for the rest of her students. Her world-class musicianship and sharp, artistic wizardry make it beyond easy for me to recommend Yana to anybody, regardless of their current experience and abilities. A+
