Certified Suzuki Guitar instructor with a Masters Degree in Classical Guitar Performance. Over 25 years of teaching experience.
I also teach Rock Guitar, Blues Guitar, Jazz and Acoustic Guitar. I accept students as young a age 4 and up.
Currently a Guitar instructor at the Suzuki School of Arts in Hickory, NC. Currently an Adjunct Guitar instructor at Catawba Valley Community College. One of my former students plays lead guitar for the Band Perry. I have two former students who have completed there masters degrees in guitar. I have over 10 students who are pursuing or completed degrees in guitar.

I enjoy teaching students and watching them progress over a long period of time. I consider it a success when I am able to teach a student from a young age and see them continue lessons until they graduate High School. Many of my students have gone on to major in guitar at the college level or play in Bands professionally.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I normally start off with a trial lesson to get to know the student and also to give the student a chance to get to know me and my teaching style. If the student has never played the guitar before then we will work on how to hold the guitar and some basic techniques for the first lesson.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters Degree in Classical guitar Performance. I am a certified Suzuki Guitar Instructor and I have taught at the Suzuki School of the Arts for 27 years. I also have taught guitar at Catawba Valley Community College since 2008.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching group classes while I was an undergraduate in college at Appalachian State University. I was teaching Guitar 1 and Guitar 2 classes. Then I started teaching at a local music store in Boone, NC. After I graduated I started teaching at the Suzuki School of the Arts in Hickory, NC
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with many students as young as 4 years of age. a lot of these students have stayed with me until they graduate from high school. I have also taught adult students who were in their seventies. I have also taught some students with learning disabilities such as ADHD, Dyslexia, and Asperger's syndrome.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have many events that I am fond of. With Suzuki, we go on tour almost every year. I have played concerts with my students in 10 different countries. Which include: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, England, France, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Ireland, and the Bahamas.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would suggest doing a trial lesson with the teacher to make sure you are getting a teacher who is able to teach you the right way. You also want to make sure that you like the teacher because you will be spending several years with that teacher if he is the right one.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
They should ask what method the teacher uses to teach. You should find out how much experience the teacher has. Also, you should find out if the teacher is going to be able to teach you to learn how to read music in addition to being able to learn songs.
