My teaching approach:
Guitar Lessons in classical, jazz, blues, folk and pop guitar. Studies include: fingerboard harmony, ear training, reading, technique, interpretation and expression, and vocal coaching for all accompaniment styles with a strong emphasis on "productive practice." Student recording is available. Over 30 years professional experience and author of the highly acclaimed book, From Silence to Sound.

My influences are many and varied - from classical, to jazz musicians and composers, North and South Indian classical musicians, many writers, poets, and philosophers..

On the first lesson I ask each student what they want - where they want to go with their music. I ask them to play and determine where their level with regard to technique, interpretation, reading skills, fingerboard harmony, etc.. I suggest a plan of work, and if we are in agreement, we proceed...
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:
We always attempt to use your lesson in the most productive way. If you have practiced a lot or a little, we will adjust the lesson for that. If you bring questions, we will answer them; problems, we will solve them; the only reason we are there is to up-level your musical experience and the joy that flows from it.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We meet, talk about goals and aims, and put together a plan to get there. Then we get to work!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Full time professional musician and teacher for over forty years.
Studied classical guitar with Jack Ceccini, studied music theory and 20th Century music with Dr. Harold Berlinger at North Eastern State College in Chicago, learned jazz and country music from Jethro Burns (friend of the family).

$50.00 per hour lesson - preferably one lesson a week.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Always read the teachers endorsements from his/her students - that will always give the truest sense of that teacher's skills - musical and personal.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
If you have the interest, don't hesitate - don't over think it - just get with a teacher you feel comfortable with and do it!
